Traffic Issues

Speeding traffic continues to be a concern in the village, so the Parish Council has purchased a number of Speed Awareness Monitor (SAM2) devices, in order to assist the 'Speed Watch' team with gathering data.

Updates

12th June 2023:

I’ve analysed the latest SAM2 data for both Upper and Lower Stoke, which spans from early May to date and the main analysis sheets are attached.

The figures for Norwich Road are fairly average and don’t cause too much concern.

The figures for Poringland Road tell a very different story and we clearly have a problem on this straight stretch of road which is fast becoming a race track; this is despite us trying to increase our Speedwatch sessions there, coupled with what I know has been a very good effort by the local Police.

30–40% of drivers are now regularly speeding well in excess of the “tolerated" 33-34mph and it’s difficult to know what else we can do.   I’m minded to speak to Highways Dept. at NCC to see if they have any suggestions and I’ll report back with anything they offer.   Of course, if any of you reading this have any suggestions, I’m all ears!

13th February 2023:

We’ve had one of our speed monitoring machines up for 2 weeks now in Mill Road, near the bridge.  There was an average of 900 vehicles per day using the road, from the Norwich Road end, with an average speed of 22mph.   The speed doesn’t seem to be an issue but the heavy traffic certainly is, and I’m going to forward the figures to Highways Dept. at Norwich County Council for their information with a request for a call back to see if there's anything we can do to limit the traffic using that road -  don’t hold your breath!

As for Chandler Road in Upper Stoke we did the same exercise for 2 weeks and found an average of 300 vehicles per day with an average speed of 24mph.   Once again the speed doesn’t seem to be a problem but 300 vehicles a day going in one direction is a lot for such a narrow country lane.   Having said that the only solution would seem to be to make the road One Way, which I’ve enquired about, but been told it can’t be done for all sorts of reasons.   It seems as if we’ll just have to live with it for the time being but we’ll keep monitoring it over the next few months and see if it increases significantly…….

25th January 2023:

LOWER STOKE

Traffic travelling South through the village on Norwich Road between 20th December 2022 and 24th January2023 amounted to a total of just over 44,000 vehicles.  The bulk of those were travelling at an average speed of 30mph with some 15% exceeding the 30 limit by about 3mph.  The maximum isolated driver was recorded doing 55mph at 10.30pm on 28th December.  This picture shows an improvement on previous figures and considering the absence by and large of Community Speedwatch over that period, is encouraging.   Let’s hope this trend continues……..

UPPER STOKE

Traffic travelling West along Poringland Road, towards Lower Stoke, between the same period as above amounted to a total of just over 40,000 vehicles.   The bulk of those (85%)were travelling at or less than 33mph, but 28% of the total were exceeding the speed limit.  The average overall speed was 28mph due to the fact that a lot of vehicles passing the machine were probably just leaving their driveways and starting their journey, thereby going slowly.  One stupid individual was recorded as driving at 70mph at 2.35pm on 15th January, a time when many drivers would have been travelling to pick their children up from school.  This general picture is not good and it is to be hoped that with a renewed Community Speedwatch presence and some help from the local Police (to be arranged) we can improve things in the near future………
